Karl SUSKE
Karl SUSKE was born in Reichenberg/Liberec (Northern Bohemia) in 1934. He studied at the music conservatories of Weimar and Leipzig with Gerhard Bosse. After his exam in 1954 he became first violinist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, two years later he became first concertmaster and member of the Gewandhaus Quartet. In 1962, he went to Berlin to take over the post of first concertmaster at the Staatsoper "Unter den Linden". In 1977, he returned to Leipzig where he was first concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra until June 2001. At the same time he became leader of the Gewandhaus Quartet. He held this post until 1993.
From 1975 to 1987 he taught at the Weimar music college. From 1987 to 1990 he was professor at the Leipzig music college. He was leader of the Suske Quartet founded in 1965 (later Berlin String Quartet). With this ensemble he toured Europe, the United States and Japan and made many CD recordings including all string quartets by Mozart and Beethoven. At the same time Karl SUSKE also recorded the violin sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven with Walter Olbertz.
During the concert tours of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Karl SUSKE often played as a soloist. Karl SUSKE's discography also includes sonatas and partitas by Johann Sebastian Bach as well as the violin concerto by Beethoven with the Gewandhaus Orchestra under Kurt Masur. From 1991 to 2000 Karl SUSKE was first concertmaster of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. In addition, the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo invited him several times as a guest concertmaster.
