The violin concertos of Josef Mysliveeek provide an unexpected source of musical pleasure, sometimes with a decidedly Slavic accent (try the delightful G major, or Pastoral, on Supraphon's Vol. 2) but cast well within the bounds of classical propriety. Shizuka Ishikawa plays them with considerable gusto, Libor Peek directs extremely well-drilled accompaniments and the 1983-6 Prague recordings sound excellent.

Thank you very much Otto!
ReplyDeleteYes, Otto, thank you. Curiously, I was talking yesterday about lesser known composers with the strings teacher at school, and he brought up the name of Myslivecek. I'm eager to hear this Bohemian.
ReplyDeletePesek has his name on any number of good recordings, but he never seems to have become well known.
