From the era when England was believed to have produced no composers, and when women in particular were understood as incapable of composing in the larger genres, Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) wrote three brilliant symphonies as well as other works including cantatas and string quartets.

The symphony premiered in 1863, the A minor Symphony, composed under a pseudonym, completed in 1876. Alice Mary Smith (1839-84), born into a well-to-do London family and later known under her married name of Mrs Meadows White, was a pupil of Sterndale Bennett and Macfarren.

  1. thanks Otto. I am very much interested in women composers. Chandos also recorded some works by an American woman, Amy Beach, which Horacio has posted. Would be nice to see more music composed by the ladies!
