  1. Thank you, Otto. I grew up just a little too late to hear Ormandy conduct the Philadelphians live, much to my regret. By the time I was in college in Philadelphia, Muti had arrived, and as exciting as he was, I don't believe he was ever fully embraced by the old guard of the city. By the time the new symphony hall was completed (with its state of the art, ready for digital recording facilities), Muti was gone, and things don't seem to have been the same since. More and more, Ormandy's time is looking like the last Golden Age for the Philadelphia Orchestra.
