This disc as a collection of Handel Overtures, coupled with Overtures from the end of the 18th and start of the 19th Century, is very appealing. Unsure as to how Richard Bonynge would conduct the Handel; given that he doesn't "do" Handel much, not apart from some Handel Operas early on in the career of his wife Joan Sutherland. I needn't have worried. Along with the English Chamber Orchestra he is faithful to Handel's intentions, and whilst this is not an "authentic instrument" recording it is no worse for that. As well as the Handel we have Overtures by some well known (Haydn, Salieri, Gretry, Boieldieu) and some not so well known (Kraus, Gassman, Paer, Sacchini) composers. |
